Donor Stories

Donna Reid-Hayes '78

Donna Reid-Hayes '78 has a long, dynamic connection with Punahou that spans more than 25 years — 12 as a student and 16, and counting, as a faculty member. Donna and her husband are the proud parents of Paul '06, Reid '09 and David '09.
"My Punahou experience helped shape me and the life that I chose," Donna says.

As an alumna, faculty member and parent, Donna believes in supporting the Punahou Annual Fund. Its revenue makes a difference in the School's daily life, including supporting students' education through robust programs and curricula. "Programs give Punahou its breadth and depth," she says, adding, "Academics are one thing, but the choices and options available to children here are what make it a special experience."

"The things I appreciate outside of academics are some of the important parts of Punahou — drawing, jewelry and glassblowing classes; the opportunity to study Hawaiian culture and language; and exploring music, dance and performance. Holoku is something that I participated in as a teenager and all three of my boys participated in throughout their time at Punahou. These are the things that are unique to Punahou and are so important to the development of our children."

As a kindergarten teacher for the past 13 years, Donna is one of the first influences in a young student's educational career. "Teaching children to be creative thinkers, to extend beyond what is the traditional thinking, is critical to their future success. Giving children time to flourish and time to discover their talents and their passions is exciting."

By supporting the Annual Fund, Donna is an advocate for the school on many levels. "Punahou offers an extraordinary experience to the children who are here. I will often tell new or prospective parents that the life my children had here for 13 years was a lovely life."
