From ancient times to ILH adoption in 1979, canoe paddling thrived as Hawai‘i’s state sport. Punahou began by racing short distance regattas in the Na ‘Opio League. Competition included both OIA and ILH schools. This participation was discontinued in favor of using Saturday practices for long distance open-ocean training.
Today, ILH paddling races take place in the open waters off Magic Island. The Malia Mold six-person fiberglass canoes are 40-feet long and weigh a minimum of 400 pounds.
